“Magician Extraordinaire” to appear at library
“An Artistic Experience” at the Library with the MagicGuy, Don Russell will be held Friday, July 31 at 1 & 3 p.m. Magic and mayhem abound in this magnonomous conglomeration of fabulous ideas inspired by the wonder of reading. Experience new rope challenges, amazing handkerchief dilemmas, a baffling canister mystery, the Barbed Wire Rings of “Death”, and other great illusions, concluding with the time-honored levitation of an audience member. Then, check out how everything was done at the Library!
The Magic Guy Don Russell has performed around Alaska and the United States. His mix of entertainment and education, which he has dubbed edu-tainment, allows youth to enjoy a memorable presentation while presenting a theme or message at the same time.
In addition to his magic shows at 1 and 3 p.m., Don Russell will also do a story hour at 11 a.m. presenting his stories of “My Dog and His Fabulous Adventures.”
The Magic Shows are the culminating program of the Summer Reading Program, which is sponsored by the Build-A-Bear Foundation, the Friends of the Homer Library and the Homer Public Library, as well as other local donors. For more on the Summer Reading Program, see Page 4.

Middle School-age youth from the Homer area are invited to get on the list for an upcoming digital photography workshop with visiting teacher and photographer Sam Modest.
The class, which runs for two weeks starting July 13, is free, but space is limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Modest, who has taught photography workshops in Maine since 2007, will encourage students to explore their world through the digital camera lens. Cameras will be provided, and students have the option of having their photos printed and hung in a display at the library following the class.
Modest said the class would focus on both technical skills and thematic, open-ended assignments that allow room for self-expression and self-reflection among the students. Some assignments might include, “What do you think when you hear the word ‘family’, ‘home’, or ‘nature.’
“I enjoy seeing the world through a child’s eyes,” said Modest, adding that photography has the unique ability to allow youth to express themselves and gain confidence.
Modest is a 2009 graduate of Bowdoin with a degree in Asian Studies. He is visiting Homer with friends this summer, and will be teaching in Darjeeling, India in the fall, where he hopes to also incorporate digital photography workshops (as well as Ultimate Frisbee) into his curriculum. His time in India is funded through the 2009 Global Citizens Grant program.
He taught photography to the fifth-grade students of Woodside Elementary School in Topsham, ME, since the fall of 2007.
Summer Reading Program programs abound with creativity
If you have yet to sign up for the Summer Reading Program, now is the time. July is packed with programs and events, and the culminating event - the All-You-Can-Eat Ice Cream Bash - is just around the corner.
For those already signed up, take advantage of several programs geared to celebrate this year’s theme of creativity at your library. On July 10, Beth Trowbridge for the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies returns to discuss Patterns in Nature.
Youth age 10-12 may want to sign up for a two-week-long Youth Digital Photo Club running July 13-24 (see Page 1 for details).
Musicians from the community come to the library July 17 from 1-2:30 to share their instruments, ranging from woodwinds to strings.
On July 24, Aleutic artist and historian Patrick Lind will present a Aleut visor-making workshop for 20 youth 3rd through 6th grade. Registration is required.
The library gets magical on July 31 with Don Russell, aka “The Magic Guy.” Two magic shows and a story time round out the day’s programs (see more on Page 1.)
And last but certainly not least, the Summer Reading Program All-You-Can-Eat Ice Cream Bash will be held Saturday, August 1 from 2-3:30 p.m. at the Homer Middle School.
